Map: Maryland Heights, Sept. 13, 1862
The defense of Maryland Heights, Sept. 13, 1862, under the command of Col. Thomas H. Ford, 32nd OVI

The 32nd OVI holds Maryland Heights against attacks by McLaws' Division of Jackson's Corps. The first line withdraws from the forward abatis and reforms in a stronger second position. The Ohioans are reinforced there, but Barksdale's Mississippi brigade flanks the Federal line and forces a precipitous retreat by many untested New Yorkers on the mountain. After much hard fighting, Col. Ford orders a retreat from Maryland Heights during a lull in the battle. The 32nd OVI takes the road down the mountain during its march back to Harpers Ferry and eventually to Bolivar Heights. They will surrender there with the rest of the garrison two days later.
