Enlisted in Company I, 16th Ohio Infantry (3 Year) as 1st Sergeant on 23 October 1861 at the age of 23. Promoted 1st Lieutenant of Company A, 120th Ohio Infantry on 12 August 1862. Promoted Captain, Company B, 120th Ohio Infantry on 14 January 1863. Captured while in Hospital at Raymond, Mississippi on 24 May 1863. Transferred to Company E, 114th Ohio Infantry on 27 November 1864.
