Enlisted as Corporal on13 August 1862 at the age of 19. Promoted Sergeant on 18 October 1862, 1st Sergeant on 1 January 1863, 2nd Lieutenant on 1 February 1863, and 1st Lieutenant of Company A, 102nd Ohio Infantry on 12 October 1864. Appointed Regimental Quartermaster on 2 February 1865 and transferred to Field and Staff. Mustered Out on 30 June 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee.
