Enlisted at age 20 in Smithfield, Ohio on 8/14/62. On his enlistment paper, it is evident that Bond was illiterate (marked an X as his signature. A farmer by occupation, Bond had hazel eyes, dark hair, a dark complexion and stood at 5'5" tall. He was accidentily wounded 4/10/64 by the explosion of a shell, resulting in the amputation of his left arm. He was thus discharged for disability on 9/4/64.
