Whenever a soldier should appear in more than one location it is important and efficient to keep the following in mind:

1) Always have a starting place. For a soldier, his initial entry should always be in his correct regiment and company.
2) You will add the soldier's name and brief military service as a CATEGORY in his correct regiment and company.
3) LISTINGS are added to his CATEGORY. All listings can be connected to other categories throughout the archive by utilizing the "Mangage" feature at the top of the listing submission form.

The following circumstances might constitute the soldier's appearance in multiple categories:

1) GAR
2) Cemetery compilations & Graves.
3) More than one regiment or company (transfers, reenlistments)

ALWAYS BEGIN BY ADDING THE SOLDIER AS A CATEGORY TO HIS CORRECT REGIMENT AND COMPANY. THEN GO FROM THERE.

EXAMPLE:

John Doe enlisted in the 65th Ohio Infantry Company A.
He was buried in Grove Cemetery.
He was in GAR post # 569 in Ashland County.

1) Add John Doe as a category to the 65th Ohio: Company A Category.

2)Create a listing for "Grave: John Doe" and "GAR: John Doe" inside of his category you just created. Be sure you are in his CATEGORY before adding.

3) Connect each appropriate listing to other categories by utilizing the MANAGE feature on the listing page. If the other categories have not been created then create them first and come back to edit your listings to begin the connection.

For the "Grave" listing....repeat the same steps but instead of finding the GAR post category you are looking for the cemetery categories. If the specific cemetery has not been created then add the cemetery name as a CATEGORY in the correct county and in the "Ohio Cemeteries" category prior to connecting.

So for the GAR listing "GAR: John Doe".....at the top of the submission page use the back button (in manage categories)or Directory button and keep clicking until you come across the "Ohio GAR Posts" category. Find the correct county and GAR post category inside of this category. Click on it. Then press "Also Appear In Category" prior to submitting. For over achievers, you can create the soldier's name within the GAR Post category if desired prior to connecting the initial listing.

Print this and give it a whirl. Be patient so no mistakes are made and always keep in mind future researchers when submitting. Try to submit in the most logical fashion you can think of.
