April 20, 1861, there was a great mass meeting in Mount Vernon, presided over by Hon. Henry B. Curtis. Thousands of
people were present, and party-lines, which up to this time had been tightly drawn, were in a great measure obliterated.
Republicans and Democrats, with a few exceptions, met on common ground, to consult together for the safety of a common
country. This was more the case and more noticeable in the beginning of the war than a little later, when party lines were
again drawn on the great issues involved in the war. |
